Bulembu, Swaziland Trip

Where are we going?
We are a team of twenty two 15 year old students who will be going to Bulembu - a village in Swaziland, South Africa. Currently, nearly 25% of the Swaziland people require food aid. Due to HIV/AIDS, Swaziland is experiencing a negative population growth which, if unchecked, would mean that the population would cease to exist by 2050.
When are we going?
We will be giving up our summer holidays to take part in this educational trip. We will be there from Tuesday 27th July to Saturday 14th August.
Why are we going?
There are three main aims of the trip:
to provide help to the village
to teach us a life long lesson in teamwork, organisation and respecting social differences between cultures
to create a legacy and blueprint for subsequent annual volunteering experiences
Who are we helping?
We will be helping the community of Bulembu - a former mining town abandoned in 2001 due to inactivity in the mines. In 2006, a team of entrepreneurs and social developers purchased the town with a view to giving it ‘new-birth’ as a self sustaining community. We will be helping the youth of the town, especially those orphans affected by HIV/AIDS.
What are we doing?
Before leaving on our trip, we will be heavily involved in organising fundraising events. This will enable us to build our organisational and teamwork skills.
During our time in Swaziland, we will be volunteering in:
the orphanage and the Bulembu Christian Academy
the building, maintenance and timber projects
the dairy, bakery, catering, water and honey industries
the sports and youth programmes
On our return from Swaziland, we will advise on tasks for future trips and create a presentation of our trip and deliver it to various interested parties.

ReplyDeleteYes, this blog will be updated weekly until we leave, then it will be updated on a daily basis while we are in Bulembu. The idea is to send news and pictures home every day via the blog.
